Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve at the wrist from a ligament. The nerve becomes compressed as it travels in a confined space. Patients develop numbness in their hand which wakes them at night. Their symptoms are made worse with driving and heavy manual labour. It can also be aggravated by pregnancy. It can be diagnosed by electrical nerve testing. It is treated by hand surgery.

Trigger fingers

Trigger fingers are caused by thickening of the tendon as it travels through the tendon sheath and the pulleys in the hand. This causes the finger to catch as it moves from a closed fist to an open hand.
It can be treated by an injection of local anaesthetic and cortisone. If that fails then hand surgery gives excellent relief.

DeQuervains tenosynovitis

DeQuervain's tenosynovitis is another condition where the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist become inflamed in the tunnel they travel in. This causes pain at the wrist and pain with picking up objects using your thumb.
It can be treated by an injection of local anaesthetic and cortisone. If that fails then hand surgery gives excellent relief.

Dupuytrens disease

Dupuytren's disease is a thickening of the fascia under the skin. it causes the fingers to contract and curl up. Making a fist is not affected but the patient is unable to fully open their hand. This is best treated by a surgical release.
